avathArikai (Introduction)
When asked “As this (prapaththi) is ordained along with angams (ancillary steps), will the rule ‘yath yath sAngam, thath thath sAdhanam‘ (whatever is having ancillary step/limb, that will be considered as sAdhanam (upAyam, means)), not be applicable here?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains that such rule will not be applicable here as he thinks “once the nature of the ancillary aspect is explained, it will be clear that such rule will not be applicable here”.

That is, prapaththi will not tolerate any efforts of the chEthana other than itself which is in the form of accepting bhagavAn as upAyam. The ancillary step (prerequisite) of prapaththi is to abandon all other efforts along with the trace. In “yath yath sAngam“, the act is explained as sAdhanam (upAyam) only when the ancillary step involves some action; unlike that, since the ancillary step of prapaththi is in the form of abandoning all activities, that itself is revealing the anupAyathvam (not being upAyam) of prapaththi.
