avathArikai (Introduction)
When asked “Still, when one realises the dangerous situation of self in samsAra as said in jithanthE sthOthram 1.4 ‘anantha klESa bhAjanam‘ (abode of all sorrows), should one not attract ISvara who is a friend in need, through surrender of self, and not eliminate the danger, by his grace?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully responds.
sUthram 62
Apaththaip pOkkik koLLugiROm enRu bramiththu aththai viLaiththu koLLAdhozhigaiyE vENduvadhu.
Simple Explanation
One should simply avoid causing more danger, being bewildered that we are eliminating the danger.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
Apaththai …
That is – thinking that we will surrender unto the divine feet of sarvESvaran and eliminate the danger of samsAra, being bewildered that we can remove the danger with our prapaththi (surrender), one should not cause the danger of damaging one’s true nature of pArathanthryam (being totally dependent on bhagavAn only). This is the only thing, one should be doing to eliminate the danger. It is implied that instead of causing one danger while trying to eliminate another, if one remains withdrawn from self effort, emperumAn will naturally protect the individual.
aththai – General danger; alternatively, piLLai lOkAchAryar could be speaking about the danger which is being spoken about here (that is, the danger of damaging one’s pArathanthryam towards bhagavAn).
