avathArikai (Introduction)

piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains the actions of such personalities.

sUthram 82

pirAtti svaSakthiyai vittAL, dhraupadhi lajjaiyai vittAL, thirukkaNNamangai ANdAn svavyApAraththai vittAn.

Simple Explanation

SrI mahAlakshmi abandoned her ability, dhraupadhi abandoned her shyness and thirukkaNNamangai ANdAn abandoned his self-efforts.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

pirAtti svaSakthiyai vittAL, dhraupadhi lajjaiyai vittAL

svaSakthiyai vittAL

sIthAppirAtti did not use her ability to protect herself considering that such act will destroy her pArathanthryam (total dependence), Instead of waiting for perumAL (SrI rAma) who is her master. sIthAp pirAtti herself said in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 22.20 “asandhESAththu rAmasya thapasaS chAnupAlanAth | nathvA kurmi dhaSagrIva basma basmArha thEjasA ||” (Due to not receiving the order of SrI rAma and due to having to preserve my penance of being a loyal wife, I am not burning you who are having ten heads, down to dust with my radiance while you deserve to be done so).

lajjaiyai vittAL

While being disrobed by dhuSSAsan in the middle of the grand assembly, instead of feeling ashamed and holding on to the garment with one hand, dhraupadhi gave up the effort fully and raised both her hands to seek protection of bhagavAn.

Since pirAtti is greatly knowledgeable, she could have easily had full faith in perumAL; but not being so intelligent, dhraupadhi called out for krishNa with great faith in the grand assembly, giving up her shyness; in this context, dhrauapdhi’s act is greater than pirAtti’s act.

thirukkaNNamangai ANdAn sva vyApAraththai vittAn

That is – he abandoned all acts which are done to protect the self. [The incident is narrated here] A soldier’s dog was beaten by another soldier; being unable to bear it, the soldier (whose dog was beaten) set out to kill the soldier who hurt the dog and kill self as well. Seeing this ANdAn thought “If a lowly person would do so much for someone [a dog] taking shelter seeking protection, even at the cost of losing one’s own life, if we take shelter of paramachEthana (supreme lord), how will he feel [on our suffering]?” and gave up all activities; considering himself to be like such dog, he at once came to thirukkaNNamangai paththarAvi emperumAn. It is well known that ANdAn entered the temple and started living there in a corner.
