avathArikai (Introduction)

piLLai lOkAchAryar is mercifully answering the doubt “Engaging in acts which are allowed considering them to be duty will stop only when the thought that those are enjoyable, is given up; in such case how can one give up these matters which were liked forever?”

idhudhAn silarkkazhagAlE piRakkum; silarkku aruLAlE piRakkum; silarkku AchAraththAlE piRakkum.

Simple Explanation

For some, this detachment will be acquired by [bhagavAn’s] beauty; for some, this detachment will be acquired by [bhagavAn’s] mercy; for some, this detachment will be acquired by [bhagavAn’s and pUrvAchAryas’] conduct.

silarkku azhagAlE piRakkum

For the bhakthi pAravaSya prapannas (those who are surrendered due to overwhelming bhakthi), the detachment will be acquired by experiencing the beauty of bhagavAn’s forms which captivate everyone.

silarkku aruLAlE piRakkum

For the gyAnAdhikya prapannas (those who are surrendered due to overwhelming knowledge) who are seers of truth, this detachment will be acquired by bhagavAn’s great mercy to eliminate attachment towards other aspects thinking “This AthmA who is qualified to enjoy me, is engaging in worldly pleasures and going towards disaster!”.

silarkku AchAraththAlE piRakkum

For agyAna prappannas (those who surrender due to ignorance) who lack knowledge, as they know about the enlisted conduct through SAsthram and instructions from AchAryas, this detachment will be acquired:

  • the ways bhagavAn himself acted and made others behave, according to the situation,  as said in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 35.11 “rAmO bhAmini lOkasya chAthurvarNasya rakshithA | maryAdhAnAm cha lOkasya karthA kArayithAchasa: ||” (Oh beautiful sIthA! SrI rAma who protects the people of all four varNas, is the one who arranges the boundaries in the world and is the one who makes others follow those boundaries).
  • the conduct of the greatly knowledgeable pUrvAchAryas
