avathArikai (Introduction)

piLLai lOkAchAryar is explaining such importance [for prapanna].

sUthram 101

maRRai iruvarkkum nishidhdha vishaya nivruththiyE amaiyum; prapannanukku vihitha vishaya nivruththi thannERRam.

Simple Explanation

For the other two [those who seek worldly pleasures and those who practice bhakthi yOgam to reach bhagavAn] detachment from forbidden acts is sufficient; for a surrendered person, being detached from enjoyments allowed in SAsthram, is a speciality.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

maRRai iruvarkkum …

That is – for the aiSvaryakAman (seeker of worldly wealth) who indulges in sensual pleasures and for the upAsaka (bhakthi yOgi) who pursues other upAyams [than bhagavAn], it is sufficient to refrain from acts which are forbidden in SAsthram such as engaging with others’ wives etc; for the prapanna who is different from those two types of personalities, refraining from engagement with one’s wife which is allowed in SAsthram, is the special quality he has over others.

In those two, for aiSvaryakAman, while practicing the upAyam, he can engage with his wife as a duty [to create good progeny] and after attaining the result, he can engage with her for enjoyment; for the upAsaka, since his goal is to enjoy bhagavAn, though he does not have the scope for enjoyment with her after attaining the goal, he must engage with her while practicing the upAyam, considering it to be his duty; for a prapanna, since, even engaging with her as a duty is considered to be a hurdle for his qualification [to be a prapanna], it is said that he should be detached even from enjoyments which are allowed in SAsthram.
