avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “emperumAn who is svathanthra (independent), while accepting these personalities (hanuman and SrI guhapperumAL), approached them through iLaiya perumAL and sIthAp pirAtti respectively as said in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 3.27 ‘thamabhya bhAsha saumithrE sugrIva sachivam kapim’ (Oh lakshmaNa! You speak with hanuman who is the minister of sugrIva and who can speak well) and periya thirumozhi 5.8.1 ‘mAzhai mAn mada nOkki umbi embi’ (This sIthA who has young deer’s eyes is your friend and your brother lakshmaNa is my brother); are there other situations where he accepted chEthanas through purushakAram (mediators – those who unite jIvAthmA and paramAthmA)?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains.

Simple Explanation

It can also be seen where SrI rAma gave refuge to SrI vibhIshaNAzhwAn that he approaches chEthanas through those mediators just as chEthanas approach bhagavAn through them.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

ivan …

That is – those who are held as purushakAram by the chEthana while surrendering to emperumAn, are the same ones who are held as mediators by emperumAn as well while accepting the chEthana, can not only be seen while accepting thiruvadi (hanuman) and SrI guhapperumAL, but also where he accepted SrI vibhIshaNAzhwAn.

How is that so?

SrI vibhIshaNAzhwan surrendered saying as in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 17.16 “sOham parushithasthEna dhAsavachchAvamAnitha: | thyakthvA puthrAmScha dhArAmScha rAghavam SaraNam gatha: ||” (I, who gave good advice to rAvaNa, was abused with harsh words by such rAvaNa and was insulted like a servant, have abandoned my wife and children and surrendered to SrI rAma) and remained as in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 17.13 “sarvalOka SaraNyAya rAghavAya mahAthmanE | nivEdhayatha mAm kshipram vibhIshaNam upasthitham ||” (Oh monkeys! Please quickly go and inform about me who is named vibhIshaNa and who has arrived here closely to surrender unto the great personality rAghava who is the refuge for all). While accepting SrI vibhIshaNAzhwAn through abhaya pradhAnam (offering refuge), he accepted SrI vibhIshaNAzhwAn  through sugrIva mahArajar who is the leader for all the devotees there as said in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 18.34 “Anayainam harisrEshta dhaththamasyAbhayam mayA | vibhIshaNO vA sugrIva yadhi vA rAvaNassvayam ||” (Oh sugrIva, the best among monkeys! I give protection to vibhishaNa (who gave up his relatives);  whether it is vibhIshaNa or even rAvaNa, bring him in front of me).

pirAtti’s physical presence is not seen while SrI rAma was accepting thiruvadi and SrI vibhIshaNAzhwAn and hence accepting them through pirAtti is not visibly seen. But since while mercifully going to lankA, as pirAtti threw here divine ornaments and glanced at them mercifully, and after mercifully arriving at lankA, as she mercifully glanced at SrI vibhIshaNAzhwAn to go and surrender at the divine feet of perumAL, we should consider that perumAL accepted them through her only. Since she is parathanthrA (totally dependent), she will not do anything different from his thoughts; this is why, while explaining paragatha svIkAram, piLLai lOkAchAryar is also enlisting perumAL accepting SrI vibhIshaNAzhwAn [by the merciful glance of pirAtti].
