avathArikai (Introduction)
When asked “Can you say that there is no value in greatness based on birth? Aren’t all SAsthrams greatly glorifying brAhmaNyam?” piLLai lOkAchAryar explains subsequently.
sUthram 207
brAhmaNyam vilaich chellugiRadhu, vEdha adhyayanAdhi mukaththAlE bhagavallAbha hEthu enRu; adhudhAnE izhavukku uRuppAgil thyAjyamAmiRE.
Simple Explanation
brAhmaNyam (being a brAhmaNa) is valued because of the fact that one can study/practice vEdham and attain bhagavAn through that; if that brAhmaNyam itself leads to loss, then it is to be abandoned.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
brAhmaNyam …
vilaich chellugai
Being desirable.
vEdha adhyayanAdhi mukaththAlE bhagavallAbha hEthu
As said in “sarvE vEdhA yath padhamAmananthi” (That goal/state which is explained by all of vEdhams) and in SrI bhagavath gIthA 15.15 “vEdhaiScha sarvair ahamEva vEdhya:” (all of vEdhams talk about me only) – vEdham reveals ArAdhana svarUpam (the method of worship) and ArAdhya svarUpam (the object of worship) in its pUrva bhAgam (former half) and uththara bhAgam (latter half) respectively and is hence fully focussed on bhagavAn. Such vEdham helps one attain bhagavAn through a) learning as ordained in “svAdhyAyOdhyEthavya:” (vEdhams should be learnt and recited), b) understanding the meaning of vEdhams with the help of mImAmsA etc, and c) by engaging in upAsanam (bhakthi yOgam) etc.
adhudhAnE izhavukku uRuppAgil
That brAhmaNyam being the cause for ahankAram (pride), and leading to bhAgavatha apachAram (offence towards devotees) which causes great anger in bhagavAn and leading to moving away from bhagavAn as said in brahmANda purANam “anAchArAn dhurAchArAn agyAthrUn hIna janmana: madhbhakthAn SrOthriyO nindhan sadhya: chaNdALathAm vrajEth ||” (The best among the brAhmaNas who has all types of greatness, who offends my devotees, who has abandoned good conduct, has bad conduct, is ignorant, is born in lowly clans, will immediately attain the nature of chaNdALa).
thyAjyamAmiRE
By iRE piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully indicates the well-established nature of this. That which is the reason to attain bhagavAn is to be pursued; that which is the reason for losing bhagavAn is to be abandoned. Due to the certainty of this principle since this pride due to brAhmaNyam leads to loss, there is no shortcoming in such principle.
