avathArikai (Introduction)
Thus, starting from sUthram 308 “thAn hithOpadhESam paNNumbOdhu” ending with sUthram 316 “AchAryathva pUrthiyillai“, piLLai lOkAchAryar explained the true nature of AchArya, and subsequently, eliminated the incidental doubts which arose on that topic; subsequently, he explains the true nature of the Sishya.
sUthram 321
Sishyan enbadhu – sAdhyAnthara nivruththiyum, pala sAdhana SuSrushaiyum, Arthiyum, Adharamum, anasUyaiyum udaiyavanai.
Simple Explanation
Sishya is the one who is free from extraneous goals, who renders service to attain the goal, who has craving, who has attachment and is free from jealousy.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
Sishyan enbadhu …
Sishyan enbadhu
Not speaking about disciple who just listens to instructions, but is speaking about a real disciple [who would abide by the instructions].
Note: All the points are explained in the context of both bhagavAn and AchArya.
sAdhyAnthara nivruththi
Even forgetfully not engaging in aiSvaryam and kaivalyam which are contrary to the true nature of the self. Alternatively – not considering anything other than AchArya as the goal.
pala sAdhana SuSrushai
As said in kaSyapa samhithA “guru SuSrushayA vidhyA” (one should even serve the AchArya hard, to get the knowledge from him), as it is apt for a disciple to please the AchArya by services rendered to him and acquire knowledge, the service to AchArya is the means to get true knowledge which is bestowed by him. Alternatively – it is the desire to listen to the goal and the means which are matching the true nature. Another explanation – service to AchArya which is the means to acquire the goal of AchArya’s joy.
Arthi
As said in thiruvAimozhi 10.6.1 “iruL tharu mA gyAlam” (this world which gives ignorance), the sorrow in not quickly leaving this world which is the hurdle for the acquired knowledge. Alternatively – the sorrow in not enjoying the divine form of the AchArya.
Adharam
The ever increasing desire in enjoying bhagavath vishayam which is mercifully explained by AchArya to increase the eagerness in enjoying bhagavAn. Alternatively – as said in sUthram 243 “AchAryanaik kaNdAl pasiyan sORRaik kaNdAppOlE” (Disciple should see AchArya just like a hungry person would see food), the desire to engage in enjoying and serving AchArya.
anasUyai
As AchArya elaborately instructs about the greatness of bhagavAn and bhAgavathas, not having jealousy as said in SrI bhagavath gIthA 9.1 “pravakshyAmi anasUyayavE” (telling you since you are not jealous). Alternatively – not being jealous on seeing the greatness of AchArya and classmates. For sthOthra rathnam 62 “asUyA prasavabhU:” (being the birth place of jealousy), our elders explained it as “not even tolerating the greatness of the one who gave good instructions”. When one has jealousy towards bhagavAn, should we even speak about having jealousy towards his devotees? bhagavAn said in SrI bhagavath gIthA 9.1 “idham thu thE guhya thamam pravakshyAmi anasUyavE” (I shall explain to you, who are not jealous of me, this most secretive knowledge). Thus, one who has such noble qualities is known as a real Sishya.
