avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “Due to being in contact with prakruthi (matter), will the Sishya consistently avoid offenses? Would he not acquire defects? When such aspects lead to Sishya becoming target of AchArya’s anger, how would such aspect end up for both?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains.

sUthram 330

nigrahaththukkup pArhramAmbOdhu adhu hitha rUpam AgaiyAlE iruvarkkum upAdhEyam.

Simple Explanation

When the Sishya becomes target of AchArya’s anger, since it is in the form of reforming the Sishya to become good, it is acceptable for both.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

nigrahaththukku …

That is – in the state of becoming target of AchArya’s anger due to engaging in undesirable acts, such anger will control the Sishya from engaging in such wrong deeds and engage in good path, and thus leads to Sishya’s well-being; hence instead of the Sishya feeling anguished in his heart thinking “Why is the AchArya showing anger on me?” and AchArya feeling anguished thinking “Why should I have to show my anger towards the Sishya?”, this is acceptable for both Sishya who is the target of the anger, and AchArya who has the anger.
