avathArikai (Introduction)

Now, starting with this sUthram till sUthram 447 where it is said “AchArya abhinAmE uththArakam“, piLLai lOkAchAryar is mercifully highlighting that the mercy of sadhAchAryan (true AchArya) who is surrendered to, through devotees of bhagavAn, is the apt means for liberation, which is the essence of this prabandham. This portion of SrIvachana bhUshaNam is like the prime jewel, similar to an invaluable necklace having an invaluable gem as the center piece. From the beginning up to here, piLLai lOkAchAryar has given an introduction to explain this highly important principle; subsequently, he establishes this principle further. In that, at first, he mercifully explains that this is received from the instructions of a trustworthy person to ensure that everyone accepts that this is established truth in sath sampradhAyam (real/true sampradhAyam).

sUthram 443

“svAbhimAnaththAlE ISvarAbhimAnaththaik kulaiththuk koNda ivanukku AchAryabhimAnam ozhiya gathi illai” enRu piLlai pala kAlum aruLich cheyyak kEttirukkaiyAy irukkum.

Simple Explanation

I have heard this principle mercifully explained by vadakkuth thiruvIdhip piLLai saying “For the one who has destroyed ISvaran’s mercy by one’s own pride, there is no other way than AchAryan’s mercy”.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

svAbhimAnaththAlE …

That is – we have heard from our AchArya vadakkuth thiruvIdhi piLLai who very humbly heard from and was exclusively dependent on nampiLLai, who was the leader of those who knew the essence of all SAsthram, and who conducted himself as per the principles taught by such nampiLLai.  vadakkuth thiruvEdhi piLLai has mercifully explained this as the refuge, several times, saying “Since time immemorial due to one’s pride in thinking ‘only I can rule over myself’, the AthmA destroyed ISvaran’s mercy, where ISvaran thinks ‘he is my dependent’ and his acts are my responsibility and shows his mercy to liberate him; for such a person, the most merciful AchAryan who works for his liberation, accepting him, seeing his disastrous state, has merciful thought towards him as in ‘he is mine’ – there is no way for liberation for him other than such care”. This was heard by piLLai lOkAchAryar. Thus, the mercy of AchArya is the means for the AthmA’s liberation.
