Since krishNa’s glories and ability are world famous, before the start of the war, both arjuna and dhuryOdhana went to krishNa seeking his help. Let us enjoy how krishNa helped them.
Once krishNa was resting. At that time dhuryOdhana entered his divine bed room. He went straight to the side of krishNa’s divine head and stood there. Subsequently, arjuna entered and went straight to the side of krishNa’s divine feet and stood there. They both waited for krishNa to wake up. As krishNa mercifully woke up and saw, he noticed arjuna who was standing opposite to him and asked “What is the purpose of your visit?”. Before arjuna could answer, dhuryOdhana intervened and said “I came before him”. krishNa saw him too and welcomed him. He enquired their well-being and asked what was required for both of them. Both of them said that they needed krishNa to help him in the war. krishNa told them that he will remain on one side and his nArAyaNa sEnA will remain on the other side. dhuryOdhana quickly said that he wanted the nArAyaNa sEnA. arjuna said that he was happy to have krishNa on his side. krishNa agreed to their requests and vowed to help them. dhuryOdhana left that place and immediately went to the assembly of bhIshma, dhrONa et al and informed that he got the nArAyaNa sEnA from krishNa. They scolded him and told “Go and make krishNa vow that he will not take up arms in the war”. dhuryOdhana went and did the same.
In the commentary for nammAzhwAr’s thiruvAimozhi pAsuram “kollA mAkkOl“, nampiLLai has beautifully narrated this incident. In few more pAsurams’ commentaries, AchAryas have narrated this incident.
Essence in this incident:
- For those who are very affectionate towards bhagavAn, he gives himself to them. But those who show false affection, he reciprocates with false help to them.
- Even if those who are not affectionate towards him, approach him, he bewilders them and makes them get useless benefits and go away.
