sathva asathva nidhAnam iruL tharum amalangaLAga ennum janma jAyamAna kAla katAkshangaL
Simple Explanation
The reasons for sathva guNam and asathva (rajas and thamas) guNam, are bhagavAn’s glance during birth and birth (without that) in this samsAram, respectively.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
That is – the reason for rajas and thamas (which are not sathva) is birth in this samsAram which causes ignorance as said in thiruviruththam 1 “iruL tharumA gyAlaththuL inip piRavi” (birth in this samsAra which bestows darkness); the reason for sathva is, as said in mahAbhAratham mOksha parvam “jAyamAnam hi purusham yam paSyEth madhusUdhana: I sAthvikas sa thu vigyEya: sa vai mOkshArtha chinthaka: II ” (the one who is blessed by emperumAn even as he is born is known to be full of sAthvika (composed of purely good qualities)), while taking birth, being blessed with bhagavAn’s merciful glance which eliminates all the defects as said in thiruvAimozhi 1.9.9 “avan kaNgaLAlE amalangaLAga vizhikkum” (he glanced at me mercifully eliminating my ignorance, etc).
