avathArikai (Introduction)

nAyanAr established that thiruvAimozhi is a type of vEdham; but this aspect is common for all of his four prabandhams. That is why in chUrNikai 43, his four prabandhams are mercifully explained as four vEdhams. Here, he is mercifully explaining which prabandham matches which vEdham.

Simple Explanation

nammAzhwAr’s three prabandhams in iyaRpA are like the three vEdhams viz rig, yajur and atharvaNa. thiruvAimozhi which is said to be filled with tune and music, is like sAma vEdham which is musical.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

That is – the three prabandhams which are part of iyaRpA viz thiruviruththam, thiruvAsiriyam and periya thiruvandhAdhi are respectively representing rig, yajur and atharvaNa vEdhams; as said in thiruvAimozhi 10.7.5 paNNAr pAdal” (sweet poems with music and filled with tune), thiruvAimozhi which is having music and tune, is equated to sAma vEdham which is having tune and music as said in thiruvAimozhi 6.6.5paNpurai vEdham” (vEdham which is filled with tune) and periya thirumozhi 5.3.2isaikoL vEdham” (vEdham having tune). Though in the commentaries of the respective prabandhams, there is only “paNbudai vEdham” (noble vEdham) and not “paNpurai vEdham“, and “isai koL vEdham” is not specifically explained as sAma vEdham, since nAyanAr who is most trustworthy has mercifully explained it in this way, this meaning should also be accepted. Though this greatness is identified for sAma vEdham, similar greatness should be accepted for other vEdhams also.

paNpurai vEdham” indicates vEdham having abundance of tune and hence vEdham is the abode for such tune; “isaikoL vEdham” indicates vEdham having music. Since thiruvAimozhi is said to be having tune and music as in “paNNAr pAdal“, to indicate sAma vEdham having tune and music, nAyanAr has shown these references while there are other references which show equivalence of thiruvAimozhi with sAma vEdham.
