27. kuzhandhai muni

kuzhandhai means baby. muni means manana Seela (one who constantly meditates). AzhwAr is always meditating upon bhagavAn SrIman nArAyaNa’s svarUpa (true nature), rUpa (divine forms), guNa (qualities), vibhUthi (wealth), his leelAs, and all such aspects.

kuzhandhai implies that right from the moment of his birth, he began meditating upon bhagavAn SrIman nArAyaNa. The SlOkam from SrI rAmAyaNam, “bAlyAth prabhruthi su snigdha:” indicates that lakshmaNa was always devoted to and meditating upon SrI rAma even from the toddler stage. From the very time of his birth, lakshmaNa had great affection towards SrI rAma.

In thamizh, it is said “thiruththuzhAy ankurikumpOdhE parimaLaththodE ankurikamApOlE”, (Just as thuLasi when sprouts it sprouts with fragrance). Similarly, AzhwAr was always meditating upon bhagavAn from the moment of his birth.

28. gyAna dhESikan

dhESikan means one who is a mentor or a guide. It is a synonym for AchArya or guru. AzhwAr is gyAna dhESikan, the AchArya who imparts knowledge. gnAnam means knowledge. gnAnam refers to artha panchaka gyAnam: jIvAthmA svarUpam (nature of individual soul), paramAthmA svarUpam (nature of the bhagavAn SrIman nArAyaNa), upAya svarUpam (the means to reach bhagavAn), upEya svarUpam (the goal of reaching bhagavAn) and virOdhi svarUpam (the hurdles that stop us from reaching bhagavAn). These are the five principles that every SrIvaishNava must understand. At the very least, these five principles should be known. Without the artha panchaka gyAnam, there is no real benefit in being a SrIvaishNava. This artha panchaka gyAnam was bestowed upon us by nammAzhwAr (SatakOpa swAmy).
