In SrIvaishNava sampradhAyam, AzhwArs have great significance and importance. Among all the AzhwArs, nammAzhwAr (SatakOpa swAmy) is held as the chief.
nammAzhwAr is known as vEdham thamizh seydha mARan (one who gave the essence of vEdham in thamizh prabandhams). In the thamizh prabandhams, such as thiruvAimozhi, that is sahasra gIthi, he has given the essence of all the four vEdhams. Such nammAzhwAr has done great favours for us.
Among the great favours he has done, two favours stand out greatly. First is nammAzhwAr blessing us the four dhivya prabandhams, which are the essence of four vEdhams. The four prabandhams are thiruviruththam, thiruvAsiriyam, periya thiruvandhAdhi and thiruvAimozhi; they being the essence of rig vEdham, yajur vEdham, atharvaNa vEdham and sAma vEdham respectively. The second great favour done by nammAzhwAr was to bless our pUrvAchAryas starting with SrIman nAthamunigaL. It was due to nammAzhwAr’s great blessing they became wonderful and great AchAryas. Hence all the AchAryas starting with SrIman nAthamunigaL hold nammAzhwAr (SatakOpa swAmy) in a very high position.
nammAzhwAr became an AzhwAr purely by the grace of bhagavAn. He too was one of the souls suffering in this samsAram, roaming around in many births. bhagavAn, out of his causeless mercy, chose nammAzhwAr and gave him mayarvaRa madhinalam (pure, clear knowledge and devotion). Such nammAzhwAr’s divine names are to be understood and glorified by all of us.
In nammAzhwAr’s birthplace, thirukurugUr, in the temple, on a display board, nammAzhwAr’s 32 divine names are displayed. Let us see his divine names and their meanings.
