 31. prapanna jana kUtasthar

prapanna means the one who has performed prapaththi/SaraNAgathi. jana means group of people. prapanna jana means group of prapannas. kUtasthar means one who is foremost, or the leader. prapanna jana kUtasthar means the leader of all those who perform SaraNAgathi/prapaththi.

thiruvAimozhi is known as dhIrga SaraNAgathi. In thiruvAimozhi, nammAzhwAr performs continuous SaraNAgathi, especially in the sixth centum, tenth decade. In thiruvAimozhi pAsuram 6.10.10 AzhwAr says, “agalagillEn iRaiyum enRu alar mEl mangai uRai mArbA! nigaril pugazhAy! ulagam  UnRudaiyAy! ennai ALvAnE! nigaril amarar munik kaNangaL virumbum thiruvEngadaththAnE! pugal onRillA adiyEn un adik kIzh amarndhu pugundhEnE”. In this pAsuram, AzhwAr performs complete SaraNAgathi. AzhwAr considers SrI mahAlakshmI as purushakAra (the recommending authority), highlights his own defects and highlights bhagavAn’s great qualities. AzhwAr declares that there is no other refuge than bhagavAn himself. Thus, proper SaraNAgathi is performed by nammAzhwAr. Hence, he is the leader of all those who perform prapatti / SaraNAgathi.

32. periyan

periyan means big or great person. In periya thiruvandhAdhi pAsuram 75, “puviyum iruvisumbum  ninnagaththa nIyen seviyin vazhipugundhu ennuLLAy avivinRi yAn periyan nI periyai enbadhanai yAr aRivAr Un parugu nEmiyAy uLLu” nammAzhwAr says, “Who will know whether I am great or you are great?” In this pAsuram AzhwAr says “yAn periyan” (I am great). Since AzhwAr calls himself as great, he is known as periyan. During brahmOthsavam, in many dhivyadhESams praNaya kalaha uthsavam is conducted. praNaya kalaham is a romantic fight that occurs between bhagavAn and the divine consorts (SrIdhEvi, bhUdhEvi). During this uthsavam thAyArs (divine consorts) drive bhagavAn out and don’t let him inside the temple. At that time, nammAzhwAr arrives and mediates between bhagavAn and his divine consorts and solves the problem. In the end, the divine consorts of bhagavAn declare that for the sake of periyan (nammAzhwAr), they will accept bhagavAn. The greatness of nammAzhwAr is shown during praNaya kalaham uthsavam and hence he is known as periyan.
