3. mARan.

mARan is a thamizh name. mARan means one who is different from others.

He is different from worldly and materialistic people. When he was born, he did not consume mother’s milk and he did not eat anything else. Also, he did not cry out. As he grew up as a child, he did not go out and play or demonstrate any childish activities. When he reached the age of youth, becoming a young person, he did not engage in sensual pleasures, which are done by youth usually. In this manner, he was very different from worldly people. In addition, even among the AzhwArs, he was different. He was distinguished because he is the only one who is present in the OrAN vazhi AchArya paramparA (sampradhAya pravarthaka AchArya paramparA). He is the fourth AchArya in the AchArya paramparA. So, even among the AzhwArs, he is distinguished and great.

Hence he is said to be the avayavi, that is the whole, and all the other AzhwArs are avayavas, that is limbs. This is the distinguished nature of AzhwAr. Hence he is known as mARan.

4. nAvIrar

nAvIrar is a thamizh name. nAvIrar means one who is valorous in his tongue, in his speech.

Usually, a person, if he has to win, he has to engage in a fight. But AzhwAr did not move from his place. He always remained under the divine tamarind tree.

But he defeated all the different types of scholars from different sampradhAyas. He was valorous by his speech, by his dhivya prabandham pAsurams. He defeated all the different philosophers and won over all of them through his valorous speech.

In the thiruvAimozhi 4.10 decad ‘onRum dhEvum ulagum uyirum’, which is dedicated for AzhwArthirunagari bhagavAn, AdinAtha bhagavAn, he establishes that bhagavAn SrIman nArAyaNa’s supremacy is well manifested in the archA (deity) form itself. In the pAsuram ‘ilingaththitta purANaththIrum’, he explains that all the dhEvathAs are subservient to bhagavAn.

In this manner, just by his speech, he remained valorous.
