1. SatakOpan

SatakOpa is a Sanskrit name.

It is the most favourite name of nammAzhwAr. It is mentioned many times by AzhwAr himself in his dhivya prabandhams. The greatness of this name is that whenever we hear the name SatakOpa, we perform anjali towards the southern direction where AzhwAr was born. That is the special greatness of this name.

SatakOpa means one who showed anger towards Satam. Satam is a type of vAyu, a gas, which covers the newborn child and causes ignorance.

When the Satam (vAyu) tried to cover nammAzhwAr when he was born, nammAzhwAr angrily kicked the Satam and drove it out. That is why he is known as SatakOpa. This is the first and foremost name of nammAzhwAr.

2. thoNdar pirAn

thoNdar has two meanings in thamizh. thoNdar means dear devotees of bhagavAn. thoNdar also means materialistic people. nammAzhwAr, has given his favours to both bhagavAn’s devotees as well as materialistic people. That is why he is known as pirAn.

pirAn means benefactor who does favours. nammAzhwAr has favoured both devotees as well as materialistic people. AzhwAr himself says in thiruvAimozhi 9.4.9thoNdarkkamudhuNNach chol mAlaigaL sonnEn” – I have spoken these dhivya prabandhams as nectar for the dear devotees.

Thus, he has favoured the bhAgavathas (devotees) by giving them wonderful dhivya prabandhams which are like nectar. On the other hand, for the materialistic people, through his prabandhams, he has given the great knowledge about bhagavAn. In this manner, he has favoured materialistic people also.

Many materialistic people have heard the prabandhams of AzhwAr and reformed and corrected. Also, he himself identifies his nature to be as in thiruvAimozhi 8.10.11thoNdar thoNdar thoNdan sadagOpan’. That is, he is the servitor of servitor of servitor of bhagavAn. He identifies and keeps himself at the lowest level. This shows bhAgavatha SEshathvam (being the devotee servitor of bhAgavathas).

Thus, AzhwAr helps one understand the first level of being a servitor of bhagavAn. AzhwAr also demonstrates the ultimate level of being a servitor of bhAgavathas (devotees).

Thus he is thoNdar pirAn, the benefactor for devotees and everyone.
