25. parabrahma yOgi

yOgi is one who is in union with parabrahmam. Thus, AzhwAr is always in union with parabrahmam. parabrahmam is the term which indicates Sriman nArAyaNa. brahmam means that which is great and also that which makes others great. parabrahmam also means the supreme brahmam, that is the supreme lord. In nArAyaNa sUktham, it is said, “nArAyaNa parabrahma”. Sriman nArAyaNa is the parabrahmam, and he is always together with AzhwAr. Hence, he is known as parabrahma yOgi.

To understand how bhagavAn is always together with nammAzhwAr, antharyAmi form has to be understood. bhagavAn is present as antharyAmi, that is, the indwelling super soul. He is present everywhere. That is one state where he is without a visible form as antharyAmi. Also, there is the antharyAmi form, which is beautiful and distinguished with all his ornaments, weapons, and SrI mahAlakshmi. In this manner, bhagavAn is present in the hearts of the yOgis. Thus, AzhwAr, being a yOgi, is always thinking about bhagavAn and is always worshipping bhagavAn. bhagavAn is present in a visible form along with his divine consort, SrI mahAlakshmi, in AzhwAr’s heart. Thus, AzhwAr is known as parabrahma yOgi.

26. vinavAdhu uNarndha viragar

viragar means one who is aware of the means to attain the ultimate goal. bhagavAn is the upAyam (means), and bhagavAn is the upEyam (goal). nammAzhwAr knows that bhagavAn is the upAyam to attain bhagavAn.

vinavAdhu means posing a question to someone [to acquire knowledge]. nammAzhwAr never posed a question to anyone. Still, bhagavAn himself came and blessed AzhwAr with mayarvaRa madhinalam (blemishless knowledge and ultimate devotion), even though AzhwAr did not ask bhagavAn.

vinavAdhu means without asking. uNarndha means one who realised. viragar means one who knows the upAyam (means). Thus, he is the one who realised the upAyam, namely that bhagavAn is the upAyam to reach bhagavAn. This was understood by AzhwAr purely through the grace of bhagavAn. Without AzhwAr asking for this knowledge, bhagavAn himself voluntarily came and bestowed that knowledge and devotion upon nammAzhwAr. Hence, he is known as vinavAdhu uNarndha viragar.
