23. muni vEndhu

muni means manana Seela. That is, one who always meditates and thinks about bhagavAn. nammAzhwAr himself is said to be SatakOpa muni. He is always thinking about bhagavAn. He himself declares, “sindhai maRRonRin thiRaththadhallAth thanmai dhEva pirAn aRiyum” (thiruvAimozhi – 7.10.10) – “It is well known to bhagavAn himself that I do not think about or meditate upon anyone other than bhagavAn himself”. Thus, as nammAzhwAr declares, he himself is a muni, SatakOpa muni.

However, he is also the vEndhu (king, the lord) of all the munis, meditators and thinkers. In SrIvaishNava sampradhAyam, some of the AchAryas who are known as muni are SrIman nAthamuni (nAthamunigaL), yAmuna muni (ALavandhAr), rAmAnujA muni (bhagavadh rAmAnuja), and varavara muni (maNavALa mAmunigaL). nammAzhwAr (SatakOpa swAmy), is the leader, the king, and the master of all those munis.

24. pAvalar thampirAn

pAvalar means expert poets. There are many expert poets in our SrIvaishNava sampradhAyam. nammAzhwAr is the foremost among all of them. He says in thiruvAimozhi, “malakku nAvudaiyERku mARuLadhO immaNNin misaiyE?” (thiruvAimozhi – 6.4.9). That is, “I who can bewilder bhagavAn himself, for such me, is there any comparison in this world?” Thus, AzhwAr himself is a great poet.

He is also the benefactor, the leader, the king, for such great expert poets (thampirAn). Some of the expert poets in our SrIvaishNava sampradhAyam are thirumangai AzhwAr (parakAla swAmy), SrI yAmunAchArya, kurESa etc. thirumangai AzhwAr was a great poet who composed many wonderful prabandhams and was an expert in nammAzhwAr’s dhivya prabandhams, SrI yAmunAchArya, composed many granthams, especially poems on bhagavAn. kurESa swAmy composed pancha sthavams, the five beautiful poetic granthams. Thus, for all these expert poets in our SrIvaishNava sampradhAyam, nammAzhwAr is the benefactor, the lord and the leader.
