9. vakuLAbharaNa
vakuLAbharaNa is a sanskrit name. vakuLa is a flower. In thamizh, it is known as magizham pU.
AzhwAr is known as vakuLAbharaNa because he is decorated with this vakuLa mAlA always. Hence, he is known as vakuLAbharaNa. That garland itself is an ornament for AzhwAr.
AzhwAr is glorified as “vakuLAbharaNam vandhE jagadhAbharaNam munim” in parAnkuSa aStakam. This verse means ‘I worship vakuLAbharaNa, one who is having vakuLa mAlA, one who is decorated with vakuLa mAlA and one who is an ornament for the entire world (jagath)’. I worship such AzhwAr.
Just like thuLasi mAlA or vanamAlA is an important identity for bhagavAn SrIman nArAyaNa, similarly for nammAzhwAr, vakuLa mAlA is an important identity. In thiruvAimozhi 4.10 decad “onRum dhEvum” in the last pAsuram AzhwAr identifies himself as one decorated with this mAlA by saying “Atcheydhu Azhip pirAnaich chErndhavan vaN kurugUr nagarAn | nAtkamazh magizh mAlai mArbinan mARan SatakOpan“. “magizh mAlai” is vakuLa mAla. ‘magizh mAlai mArbinan’ means AzhwAr’s divine chest is decorated with vakuLa malA and hence he is known as vakuLAbharaNa.
10. vakuLa bhushaNa bhAskara
bhAskara means sun. The sun eliminates the external darkness. AzhwAr eliminates internal darkness, i.e. ignorance.
AzhwAr is decorated with vakuLa mAlA. That is what is said in vakuLa bhushaNa bhAskara. vakuLa is vakuLa mAlA. bhushaNa is an ornament. Just like AbharaNa, bhushaNa is also an ornament.
Thus, AzhwAr eliminates our ignorance and such AzhwAr is decorated with vakuLa mAlA.
