11. kurugaip pirAn

pirAn means benefactor. kurugai is the thamizh version of kurugA. kurugApuri is the birthplace of nammAzhwAr.

There was a king named kurugan. He ruled that place; hence, that place came to be known as kurugApuri. Another version describes that when brahmA performed thapasyA towards bhagavAn SrIman nArAyaNa, bhagavAn instructed brahmA to perform kainkaryam (service) in this kshEthram.

kuru means ‘to do’. Since bhagavAn said “kainkaryam kuru” (perform kainkaryam), this place is said to have become known as kurugApuri. Thus, AzhwAr is the benefactor from kurugApuri.

Thus one meaning is – the one who was born in kurugApuri and became a benefactor. Another meaning is that he is a benefactor for kurugApuri itself. Whenever we hear the name kurugUr, we perform anjali. Since AzhwAr has done us many favours, we perform anjali towards his birthplace. Thus, he has brought great fame to the kshetram, kurugApuri.

Hence he is known as kurugaip pirAn.

12. gyAnath thamizhukku arasu

arasu means king (rAjA). gyAnath thamizhukku refers to divine literature in the thamizh language.

gyAnam means true knowledge. vEdham is the source of true knowledge. nammAzhwAr presented the essence of the four vEdhams in his four dhivya prabandhams, namely thiruviruththam (rig vEdha sAram), thiruvAsiriyam (yajur vEdha sAram), periya thiruvandhAdhi (atharvaNa vEdha sAram) and thiruvAimozhi (sAma vEdha sAram).

In this manner, the true knowledge of the vEdham is presented in thamizh by nammAzhwAr. Hence, he is known as the king of gyAnath thamizh. That means he is the one who can guide and govern the divine literature, namely the dhivya prabandhams, which were given by him in the thamizh language.

Hence he is known as gyAnath thamizhukku arasu.
