avathArikai (Introduction)

For the doubt “How can all the sins get extinguished for a person who was eternally bound to this samsAra, when he became the target of bhagavAn’s divine glance and get such glories?” nAyanAr mercifully explains the greatness of bhagavAn’s divine glance.

SramaNI vidhura rishipathnigaLaip pUtharAkkina puNdarIkAkshan nedu nOkku SApam izhindhu ennap paNNumiRE.

Simple Explanation

The divine, lengthy glance of the lotus-eyed lord which purified SrI Sabhari, SrI vidhurAzhwAn and the consorts of the sages, will extinguish the sins, certainly.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

That is – after kabandhan informed as said in SrI rAmAyaNam bAla kANdam 1.57 “SramaNIm dharma nipuNAm abhigachcha” (You go to Sabhari who is an expert in dharmam), as said in SrI rAmAyaNam bAla kANdam 1.57 “sObhyagachchan mahA thEjaScha SabharIm” (Very radiant SrI rAma reached Sabhari), SrI rAma himself went and accepted Sabhari, the one born in a hunter family; (Sabhari) was made to say “By the glance of your beautiful, divine eyes, my hurdles to the goal were removed and I became pure” by him as in SrI rAmAyaNam AraNya kANdam 74.12 “chakshushA thava saumyEna pUthAsmi raghunandhana | pAdhamUlam gamishyAmi yAnaham paryachArisham ||” (Oh one who is born in raghuvamSam! I became pure by your divine, pure glance. Oh vanquisher of enemies! By your grace, I am going to reach the abode from where there is no return).

Just as flood water will naturally flow into low-lying areas, not having the qualification to be proud about being born in high heritage, as said in mahAbhAratham udhyOga parvam “nivAsAya yayau vESma vidhurasya mahAthmana:” (krishNa went to the residence of vidhura, the great person, to stay there), krishNa himself went and entered vidhura’s place, and as said in mahAbhAratham udhyOga parvam “vidhurAnnAni bhubhujE SuchIni guNavandhicha” (krishNa accepted food from vidhura who does not seek any benefit for his service and is having auspicious qualities), he eagerly consumed the food which was touched by SrI vidhura; even while the enemy dhuryOdhana showed his anger on such SrI vidhura as said in mahAbhAratham udhyOga parvam “bhIshma dhrONAvathikramya mAnchaiva madhusUdhana | kimartham puNdarIkAksha bhuktham vrushala bhOjanam ||” (Oh madhusUdhana! Oh puNdarIkAksha! Why did you ignore bhIshma, dhrONa and myself and consume the food given by vidhura, the lowly person?), he called krishNa as “puNdarIkAksha” (lotus-eyed lord). Such krishNa made such SrI vidhura become freed from all samsAra related defects and became pure, by his beautiful, divine glance.

As said in nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 12.6 “vErththup pasiththu vayiRasaindhu vENdadisil uNNumbOdhu IdhenRu pArththirundhu nedunOkkuk koLLUm” (tired due to hunger, his stomach pining due to hunger and awaiting the arrival of the wives of sages to bring food), while waiting for food at bhakthavilOchanam, he made one of the wives of sages to be immediately liberated with his eager glance immediately due to her great love towards him as said in SrI bhAgavatham 10.23.35 “thathraikA vidhruthA bharthrA bhagavantham yathASrutham | hrudhOpaguhya vijahau dhEham karmAnubandhanam ||” (One of the women had been forcibly kept back by her husband. When she heard the others describe krishNa, she embraced him within her heart and gave up her body, which is the root cause of bondage to materialistic acts) and others were made pure to be liberated subsequently after their sins were exhausted; such sarvESvaran’s merciful glance with his beautiful, divine eyes will eliminate all sins which can only be exhausted by experiencing the effects of such sins as said in thiruppAvai 22angaN iraNdum kOndu engaL mEl nOkkudhiyEl engaL mEl sAbham izhindhu” (If you look at us with your eyes which are like sun and moon, all our sorrows will disappear).

Since bhagavAn’s merciful glance is an expert in extinguishing all sins, the target which was seen by such glance will become free from all sins as said in thiruvAimozhi 1.9.9amalangaLAga” (to become pure).
