Instruction 52

dhEvathAnthara bhakthAnAm sanga dhOsha nivruththayE |
SrIvaishNavair mahAbhAgai: sallApam kArayEth sadhA ||

Simple explanation: If one interacts and spends time with devotees of other dhEvathAs, one will acquire blemishes/faults. To eliminate such blemishes and to find a remedy for that situation such a person should engage a lot of time with great SrIvaishNavas by speaking to them and listening to them.

Often it is asked that “even though we don’t worship other dhEvathAs now but in the past we had worshiped other dhEvathAs and also even now we interact with those people who worship other dhEvathAs. How do we purify ourselves from such contacts and interactions?”

When we speak with devotees of other dhEvathAs, we get influenced by their speech and by their thoughts. Due to this we get some impurity. To eliminate such impurity, we should spend more time constantly discussing with great bhAgavathas (devotees). Great bhAgavathas are those who are fully dedicated to bhagavAn and bhAgavathas. They perform kainkaryams for bhagavAn and bhAgavathas and are constantly thinking about bhagavAn as the means to attain him and as the end goal. When we converse with such great bhAgavathas and spend time with them, they purify us naturally because whatever impurities we have accumulated over time, those will be purified by the wonderful conversations we have with great bhAgavathas. They bring out the essence of SAsthram. They give us the most important aspects of our sampradhAyam. These will have an impact in our mind and in our thoughts and will purify us. That is why we should discuss with great bhAgavathas.

Instruction 53

thadhIya dhUshaka janAn na paSyEth purushAdhamAn ||

Simple explanation: Those who abuse devotees of bhagavAn (SrIvaishNavas) are considered very lowly. Such lowly people should not even be seen. Often we see that many people in this world don’t like devotees of bhagavAn. They don’t like bhagavAn and because of that they don’t like bhAgavathas too. Due to their hatred towards bhagavAn and bhAgavathas they constantly blame and abuse bhAgavathas (devotees). Such people don’t deserve to be seen because if we see them either we will get angry towards them and we may end up with unnecessary arguments or fights or we may remain indifferent towards them and that is also not good because knowing that there are people who are abusing devotees if we see them and remain indifferent that is also not good for us. Hence, it’s better not to see them at all. Also, in the very rare case, if we see them, due to their physical appearance, or due to their cunning speech and their actions, we may even start liking them. We may be deceived by them and start liking them and that is a bigger danger. We should not engage with such people and we should not have any liking or respect for such people. So it is better to avoid seeing such people who are abusing the devotees of bhagavAn.

Instruction 54

naivAvalOkayEth krUrAn apachAraparAn gurau ||

Simple explanation: We should never even see those who are engaged in offending AchAryas. In this world we see both SrIvaishNavas as well as avaishNavas. When someone does not have proper understanding about the position of an AchArya they will casually offend even such AchArya. Usually in our sampradhAyam offenses (apachArams) are categorised into three main heads. bhagavath apachAram, bhAgavatha apachAram and asahyApachAram. bhagavath apachAram is offending bhagavAn. bhAgavatha apachAram is offending bhAgavathas (devotees). But more than these two, offending AchAryas is crueler. This apachAram is asahyApachAram. asahyApachAram means those offenses which cannot be tolerated at all mainly by bhagavAn and bhAgavathas. bhagavAn and bhAgavathas will not tolerate anyone offending AchAryas. AchAryas are those who are well- learned in sampradhAya principles. Not only do they have theoretical knowledge, they also have practical knowledge and practical implementation of those principles. In addition they also reform others by giving them proper instructions, guiding, mentoring and making others be in a good position in our sampradhAyam. Such AchAryas must be greatly respected. Whether it is outsiders who offend our AchAryas intentionally or people who are having physical appearance like that of a SrIvaishNava but they don’t have the mental maturity, they offend, abuse and insult our AchAryas without any proper reasoning. Such people should not even be seen because if we see people who offend our AchAryas, we will accumulate sins for that and we have to go through the results of accumulating such sins. Hence, we should completely avoid even seeing those people.
