17. porunal thuRaivan

porunal is the name of river thAmirabharaNi which is a holy river. Even before the birth of nammAzhwAr, thirukurugUr kshEthram, namely kurugApuri kshEthram, was a puNya kshEthram where bhagavAn joyfully resided. After the birth of nammAzhwAr, it became even more sacred and holy. The river that flows along kurugApuri is the thAmirabharaNi river. It is a perennial river. It is a highly sacred river, especially due to the presence of nammAzhwAr.

thuRai means ghat. There is a ghat known as sangaNi ghat where nammAzhwAr resides. It is situated very close to the temple, AdhinAthar AzhwAr temple. AzhwAr identifies himself as “pOrunal sangaNi thuRaivan vaN then kurugUr vaN satakOpan” in thiruvAimozhi 10.3.11. In other pAsurams as well, AzhwAr identifies himself with this particular ghat in the thAmirabharaNi river.

Hence, he is known as porunal thuRaivan.

18. dheyva gyAnak kavi

As seen before, kavi means a visionary, a reformer who possesses great knowledge and is able to impart that knowledge to many people in this world and thereby reform them. nammAzhwAr, out of his immense compassion and mercy, reveals the knowledge about bhagavAn to all the people of this world. dheyva gyAnam means divine knowledge. Divine knowledge pertains to bhagavAn. nammAzhwAr, in his dhivya prabandhams especially thiruvAimozhi reveals who bhagavAn is, his divine forms, his qualities and his wealth. Many people become reformed through that knowledge. Hence AzhwAr is known as dheyva gyAnak kavi.
