One of the most amazing qualities revealed by krishNa is ASritha pArathanthryam – that is fully following the words of devotees. We can see this quality in two places – first, going as a messenger for pANdavas and second, being the charioteer for arjuna. Among these, let us enjoy his act of going as a messenger for pANdavas.
pANdavas lived in exile, in forest, for twelve years and incognito for one year and then requested their kingdom from dhritharAshtra. At that time, due to his affection for his children, he acted partial towards dhuryOdhana. dhuryOdhana et al refused to give even a small piece of land to pANdavas.
At that time, a war between pANdavas and kauravas loomed over. krishNa was expecting this only. It is the expectation in his divine heart that somehow a war should happen, all the evil forces should be gathered there and destroyed. Thus, he said “I will go and ensure peace”, went as messenger and ensured the war. He created the thought of sending him as the messenger in the minds of pANdavas. In the past, during SrI rAmAvathAram, bhagavAn sent hanuman as the messenger. hanuman perfectly executed that task and hence everyone glorified him. Seeing that, bhagavAn thought “In another incarnation we should go as a messenger and acquire such fame” and performed that task in krishNAvathAram.
In AzhwArs’ pAsurams, nammAzhwAr and thirumangai AzhwAr have beautifully enjoyed bhagavAn’s pANdava dhUtha leelA. nammAzhwAr in his thiruvAimozhi says “nAdudai mannarkkuth thUdhu sel nambikku” (he went as the messenger on behalf of pANdavas, the kings who are the leaders of the kingdom and hence became fully complete). thirumangai AzhwAr in his periya thirumozhi says “mUththavaRku arasu vENdi munbu thUdhu ezhundharuLi” (Oh you who went as a messenger previously, desiring to give the kingdom for dharma puthra, the eldest!) and “munnOr thUdhu vAnaraththin vAyil mozhindhu arakkan mannUr thannai vALiyinAl mALa munindhu avanE pinnOr thUdhu Adhi mannarkkAgip peruNilaththAr innAr thUdhan ena ninRAn evvuL kidandhAnE” (In SrI rAmAvathAram, chakravarthi thirumagan informed matchless words to be conveyed through hanuman’s mouth and sent him there; he mercifully showed his anger to have rAvaNa, the demon who was remaining firmly in lankA, destroyed with arrow; the same emperumAn, in krishNAvathAram, remained as the messenger of pANdavas who are the original kings, to have the residents of this vast earth say “he is the messenger of pANdavas” and stood; he has now reclined in thiruvevvuL).
Essence in this incident:
- In those days, going as a messenger was said to be dog’s job. Still, for the sake of pANdavas who are his devotees, bhagavAn went as messenger – this is considered as his ultimate saulabhyam (simplicity).
- emperumAn voluntarily went as pANdava dhUtha is due to the reason that if someone else went as messenger and arranged peace, it will become difficult to easily reduce the burden of earth. His divine thought was to go as the messenger, ensure the war, gather all evil forces in one place and destroy them all.
