avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “Unlike other anushtAnams (ordained acts) which are qualifiers for upAyam (means) and upEyam (goal), since this [giving up one’s body for bhagavAn’s sake] is ordained in SAsthram as an upAyam, and for an ananya sAdhana [one who would not pursue any other means], this act which should not be performed, and which has occurred out of love and hence cannot be easily abandoned, still, will it not become part of upAyam?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully responds.

anushtAnamum ananushtAnamum upAya kOtiyil anvayiyAdhu.

Simple Explanation

Engaging in both ordained acts and forbidden acts will not become part of upAyam.

anushtAnamum …

That is – as ordained acts such as giving up one’s ability etc and having love towards bhagavAn etc are part of the qualification for upAyam and upEyam, they will not be considered as part of upAyam. Similarly, as forbidden acts [for prapannas] such as giving up one’s body [for bhagavAn’s sake] are performed out of love instead of performing them as upAyam, they will not be part of upAyam and will be part of upEyam [kainkaryam]. Though such acts are well established in SAsthram as upAyam,  they will become upAyam only when they are performed with the thought that they are upAyam. If that is not the case, a prapanna residing in holy abodes etc considering it to be upEyam, instead of considering as upAyam, should also become upAyam.
