avathArikai (Introduction)
Subsequently, piLLai lOkAchAryar is mercifully explaining the evil aspect of the mind.
sUthram 350
manassukkuth thImaiyAvadhu – svaguNaththaiyum, bhagavath bhAgavatha dhOshaththaiyum ninaikkai.
Simple Explanation
Evil aspect of the mind – meditating upon the good qualities of self and meditating upon the defects of bhagavAn and bhAgavathas.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
manassukku …
svaguNaththai ninaikkai
Though one has noble qualities such as Samam (control of internal senses), dhamam (control of external senses) etc, as said in thiruvAimozhi 3.3.4 “niRai onRumilEn” (I don’t have any good qualities) and periya thirumozhi 1.9.4 “nalandhAn onRumilEn” (I don’t have any good qualities) – one should contemplate “We don’t have any good qualities), contemplating “We have acquired these qualities” and boasting about the good qualities one may have.
bhagavAnudaiya dhOshaththai ninaikkai
Thinking about bhagavAn in the following ways:
- emperumAn who had kept this AthmA who is totally dependent upon him, away from him and abandoned him seeing his karma, further, being merciless, pushed him into hellish regions as per his karma measuring it accurately; even though such emperumAn accepts the AthmA now, since he is uncontrollably independent, we cannot be confident that he will behave in such and such manner in each situation.
- in krishNAvathAram, though he incarnated to establish dharmam (virtues), he uncontrollably roamed around and engaged in illicit acts
If not for such thoughts, there is no defect which can be placed upon emperumAn who is the abode of all auspicious qualities.
Now,
bhAgavatha dhOshaththai ninaikkai
Due to having a divine form in this world, seeing the superficial appearance, contemplating bhAgavathas to be attached to material aspects, to have ahankAram etc.
Thus, this is explained to be contemplating about noble qualities of self and defects of bhagavAn and bhAgavathas.
