avathArikai (Introduction)
For the doubt “Is this response just a remedy for the mother’s accusation or a heart-felt statement?” piLLai lOkAchAryar is presenting the heart-felt nature of it.
sUthram 421
ippadich chollumbadi paNNiRRu krupaiyAlE enRu snEhamum upakAra smruthiyum nadandhadhiRE.
Simple Explanation
parAngusa nAyaki was made to respond in this manner due to his mercy which can be understood by the love and gratitude.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
ippadi …
When the mother highlighted a defect of emperumAn’s, due to his mercy, parAngusa nAyaki [AzhwAr in daughter’s mood] discarded that accusation and spoke about his quality; this can be understood from her love which is indicated in thiruvAimozhi 2.4.6 “miga virumbum” (he is very likeable) and her gratitude which is indicated in the same pAsuram “pirAn” (benefactor); hence when she said “thagavudaiyavanE” (“Oh one who has qualities like krupA (mercy) etc to be enjoyed by me!”), they were heart-felt words.
