krishNa and balarAm reached mathurA in akrUra’s chariot. They sent off akrUra and joyfully roamed around in the streets of mathurA. From the mansions there, the women of the city enjoyed seeing krishNa and balarAma.
Since they were going to the bow festival, krishNa wanted to decorate himself nicely. At that time, a washerman who would wash kamsa’s clothes came from the opposite side. krishNa went to him and asked him “Please give us some good clothes”. Without realising the greatness of bhagavAn, he refused to give him clothes. Not only that, he insulted krishNa and balarAma and scolded them. krishNa became angry and severed his head with his fingertip. He took the clothes from the bundle which the washerman had and both he and balarAma wore those clothes. This incident is nicely explained by nampiLLai for nammAzhwAr’s pAsuram “ninRavARum irundhavARum“. Once when a washerman washed periya perumAL’s clothes perfectly, bhagavath rAmAnuja desiring to have bhagavAn pardon the washerman who offended krishNa long ago, showed those clothes to periya perumAL and requested him to pardon the washerman from krishNAvathAram. periya perumAL accepted bhagavath rAmAnuja’s words.
Then, krishNa desired to wear beautiful garlands. He searched for a mAlAkAra (garland maker) named sudhAmA who was living in a small lane, and reached his home. Seeing krishNa and balarAma, the mAlAkAra became very blissful. He honoured them nicely and submitted the garlands which are best among those which he made. bhagavAn became very pleased and showered his blessings. He then took leave from there. This incident is explained by periyavAchchAn piLLai in the commentary for nAchchiyAr thirumozhi pAsuram “mAda mALigai sUzh madhuraip padhi nAdi nandheruvin naduvE vandhittu” (In mathurA which is surrounded by mansions, krishNa searched and arrived in our street). In the commentary for thiruvAimozhi pAsuram “pUsum sAndhu“, vAdhi kEsari azhagiya maNavALa jIyar shows this incident.
Then, bhagavAn desired to anoint himself with good sandalwood paste. At that time, a hunchbacked lady named thrivakrA who was serving kamsa with sandalwood paste came from the opposite side. She was carrying different varieties of sandalwood paste. krishNa requested her to give some sandalwood paste. She first gave a low quality paste. krishNa refused to accept it and asked for a better quality. She then gave a little better quality paste. krishNa then asked for the best quality she had. She became amazed at krishNa’s ability to identify different qualities of sandalwood paste and gave him the best quality paste. She applied it on his divine body and he became pleased. He decided to bless her. He pressed her toe with his divine feet and lifted up her chin with his divine hand. She got relieved from her hunchback and became radiant. This incident is highlighted by periyAzhwAr in his periyAzhwAr thirumozhi pAsuram “nARiya sAndham namakkiRai nalgu enna thERi avaLum thiruvudambil pUsa URiya kUninai uLLE odunga anRu ERa uruvinAy! achchO achchO emperumAn! vArA achchO achchO” (You said “Please give a little bit of fragrant sandalwood paste”. Realising his greatness, kUni applied the sandalwood paste on you. You relieved her of her hunchback. Why don’t you come my lord?).
In this manner, bhagavAn showed his anger on the washerman and showered his blessings on mAlAkAra and thrivakrA.
Essence in this incident:
- If one has love towards bhagavAn, one can receive his blessings. If one opposes him, one will receive his anger. In this manner, by bestowing the result which is apt for each person, he reveals his quality named “sAmyam” (Equality).
- Even if one shows a little bit of love towards bhagavAn, he showers great blessing for that.
