<< gurukula vAsam under sAndhIpani muni
After completing the gurukula vAsam, krishNa lived in mathurA. After kamsa’s death, two of his wives who were daughters of jarAsandha went to their father and informed their great sorrow to him. He became very angry and vowed that he will kill krishNa. He gathered a huge army and reached mathurA. krishNa and balarAma gathered their army, came out of mathurA and fought with jarAsandha. Finally they annihilated jarAsandha’s army completely and balarAma captured jarAsandha as well. But krishNa told balarAma “Let us release jarAsandha now. Our objective of descending on earth is to eliminate the burden of the earth. If we now free him, he will gather all the evil forces and come back. At that time we can kill them all”. balarAma freed him and let him go. jarAsandha, who escaped from there, came back with and fought with krishNa seventeen times in this manner and got driven away every time, losing the battles.
At that time, krishNa understood the great danger which was approaching and thought to migrate elsewhere. He ordered viSvakarmA to build dhvArakA city on the seashore on the west side. He brought all the people of mathurA and made them stay in dhvArakA.
In the meantime, jarAsandha was thinking of the way to defeat krishNa. At that time, a king named kAlayavana came there. He looked very brave and had a huge army. jarAsandha thought that he could take kAlayavana’s help to defeat krishNa and sent him along with his army to mathurA. As kAlayavana reached the gates of mathurA, krishNa came out wearing a beautiful lotus garland. Even as kAlayavana was seeing, krishNa started running away. kAlayavana chased krishNa. In this manner, after running for a while, krishNa reached a cave in the mountain, and entered in there.
In that cave, a king from the ikshvAku dynasty named muchukundha, who was the son of mAndhAthA, was sleeping for a long time. He helped dhEvas win a number of wars. He was separated from his family for a long time and helped the dhEvas; the dhEvas told that they will grant a boon for him. He wanted mOksham and they said “We cannot grant mOksham. First you get good rest”. He then came to this cave and started sleeping there.
krishNa after entering the dark cave, stood in a corner quietly. kAlayavana who followed and entered, saw muchukundha who was sleeping and thought it was krishNa pretending to sleep, and kicked him with his foot. muchukundha woke up from his sleep and stared with great anger. kAlayavana got burnt down to ashes by that look.
Subsequently, krishNa came out and stood in front of muchukundha. muchukundha became mesmerised by krishNa’s beauty. krishNa showed his true nature to him and he became very blissful and prayed for liberation, from krishNa. krishNa told him “In your next birth, you will reach me”.
After that, krishNa returned to mathurA and completely destroyed kAlayavana’s army. In this manner, krishNa eliminated the burden of earth, by annihilating the evil forces gathered through jarAsandha and kAlayavana.
