Ethannimiththam munnamE mudhal munnamEyAna achith ayana anAdhi sambandhangaL
Simple Explanation
The reason for these is the relationship of AthmA with achith (prakruthi/matter) and ayana (bhagavAn/abode), which is time immemorial.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
Ethath indicates both ignorance and kind heart.
That is – the reason for ignorance is the relationship with achith, which is time immemorial as said in thiruviruththam 95 “mUdhAviyil thadumARum uyir munnamE” (jIvAthmA (soul) has been, from time immemorial, entering some physical form, getting tied down to it); the reason for kind heart is the relationship with bhagavAn as said in thiruvAimozhi 2.3.6 “adiyEn adaindhEn mudhal munnamE” (Have I (who am your natural servant) not reached you since time immemorial?). Isn’t bhagavAn known as nArAyaNa (the abode of all entities)?
Thus, due to eternal relationship with achith leading to ignorance, ignorance leading to puNya/pApa, puNya/pApa leading to birth which is the cause for ignorance, birth/ignorance leading to activities in the mode of rajas and thamas, that leading to lack of knowledge in artha panchakam, due to which one will attain suffering in samsAram as said in “agyAnAth samsAra:” (ignorance leads to bondage). Similarly, due to eternal relationship with bhagavAn leading to his kind heart, kind heart leading to his mercy, mercy leading to merciful glance, such glance leading to good deeds by the AthmA, such good deeds leading to knowledge in artha panchakam, due to which one will attain bliss in mOksham, as said in “gyAnAn mOksha:” (knowledge leads to liberation).
