avathArikai (Introduction)

nAyanAr explains the special type of bhakthi which is unlike sAdhana bhakthi and which is in the form of a means and which is acquired by prapannas as a tool to serve bhagavAn, by praying to him.

svIkrutha sidhdha sAdhanar iththai sAdhyamAga irakka prApthikku munnE sidhdhikkum.

Simple Explanation

As those who are pursuing bhagavAn who is the established means, pray for this bhakthi in its accomplished state, they will acquire this before attaining bhagavAn.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

As said in sthOthra rathnam 22thvathpAdhamUlam SaraNam prapadhyE” (I firmly accept your divine lotus feet as the means) and SaraNAgathi gadhyam 5thvath pAdhAravindha yugalam SaraNam aham prapadhyE” (I firmly accept your divine lotus feet as the means), those who have accepted bhagavAn, who is the established means, as the means, just as hunger for food consumption, they pray for bhakthi from bhagavAn since it is a tool for kainkaryam, considering that just as kainkaryam is the goal, this bhakthi is also [a part of the] goal, as said in sthOthra rathnam 54bhagavan! bhakthimapi prayachcha mE ||” (kindly bestow me the sweetness of devotion [towards you] as well), SaraNAgathi gadhyam 14sthAnanathrayOdhitha parabhakthi yuktham mAm kurushva” (make me as one who has parabhakthi, paragyAna, paramabhakthi  just as I had mentioned of your devotee in 3 different places (in 8th, 11th and 18th Chapters) of the bhagavadh gIthA) and SaraNAgathi gadhyam 15parabhakthi paragyAna paramabhakthyEka svabhAvam mAm kurushva” (make me to have basic nature of para bhakthi, para gyAnam and parama bhakthi only); for such persons, that will occur after leaving the body and before reaching bhagavAn as said in SaraNAgathi gadhyam 20imAm prakruthim sthUla sUkshma rUpAm visrujya …” (just as torn clothes are thrown away, the gross and subtle body will be disposed of) [Please see the sUthram’s commentary for the full explanation].
