sUthram 13

அணுவானபடியென்னென்னில்

(aNuvAnapadi en ennil)

Meaning: If the self is distinct from matter, self-luminous, blissful, and eternal, how do we know that it is atomic in size?

Explanation

So far, the self has been described as:

  • distinct from matter (achith),
  • self-luminous (ajada),
  • of the nature of bliss (Anandha rUpam),
  • and eternal (nithya).

Even after accepting all these qualities, one may still wonder whether the self is all-pervading (vibhu) or atomic (aNu).

A seeker may therefore raise the following question:

“If the self possesses all these qualities, on what basis do we conclude that it is atomic in size?”

The commentator introduces that doubt here and prepares for its resolution in the following sUthrams.

No answer is given yet. The present sUthram merely raises the enquiry regarding the atomic nature of the self.
