Meaning

If knowledge is non-inert (self-luminous), should it not remain manifest even during deep sleep and unconsciousness?

Explanation

The doubt regarding the self-luminosity of knowledge

The AchArya had earlier established that knowledge is ajada, that is, svayam-prakASa (self-luminous).

An inquisitive student now raises the following doubt:

If knowledge is self-luminous, should it not always remain manifest?

If that is so, why does it not manifest during states such as:

  • sushupti (deep sleep), and
  • mUrchchA (unconsciousness)?

Why does knowledge appear to be absent during these states?

The AchArya raises this question in order to resolve it in the following sUthram.
