sUthram 91

Having stated that the evolution of the universe begins with the disturbance of the equilibrium of the guNas, the commentator now identifies what those guNas are.

sUthram

குணங்களாகிறன – ஸத்வ ரஜஸ் தமஸ்ஸுக்கள்.

guNangaLAgiRana – sathva rajas thamassukkaL.

Meaning

The three guNas are sathva, rajas, and thamas.

Explanation

After mentioning guNa-vaishamya in the previous sUthram, the commentator anticipates the natural question:

“What are these guNas?”

He therefore simply names them as sathva, rajas, and thamas. Their individual characteristics and functions are not discussed here, but will be explained in the following sUthrams.
