29. SrIvaishNava kulapathi

SrIvaishNava means one who exclusively worships bhagavAn SrIman nArAyaNa. They would consider bhagavAn SrIman nArAyaNa as upAyam and upEyam. It can also be said that SrIvaishNavas are a combination of SaraNAgathas and mumukshus. SaraNAgatha means one who accepts bhagavAn as the upAyam (means). mumukshu means one who seeks eternal kainkaryam to bhagavAn SrIman nArAyaNa. Thus, they consider bhagavAn as upAyam (means) and upEyam (goal). Only when both these aspects are present that person can be called as a SrIvaishNava.

kulam means clan. Irrespective of the varNa (brahmaNa, kshathriya, vaiSya or Sudhra), when one becomes SrIvaishNava, that itself is a separate clan which is made of people of all the varNa. For such SrIvaishNava kula, AzhwAr is the pathi. pathi means the lord/swAmy. SrIvaishNava kulapathi means the leader/lord of all SrIvaishNavas in the SrIvaishNava clan.

30. gyAnappirAn

gyAnapirAn is similar to the divine name gyAna dhEsikan. gyAna means the knowledge of artha panchaka. That is knowing the truth about jIvAthmA svarUpam, paramAthmA svarUpam, upAya svarUpam, upEya svarUpam and virOdhi svarUpam.

One who grants and helps us with this gyAnam is gyAnapirAn. pirAn means benefactor (upakAraka). nammAzhwAr does the favour of teaching us artha panchakam through his dhivya prabandhams.

In our sampradhAyam, varAha bhagavAn is known as gyAnapirAn. In thiruviruththam pAsuram 99, nammAzhwAr says “InachchollAyinumAga eRithirai vaiyam muRRum EnaththuruvAy idandha pirAn irum kaRpagam sEr vAnaththavarkkum allAdhavarkkum maRRellAyavarkkum gyAnappirAnai allAl illai nAn kaNda nalladhuvE” (In our sampradhAyam, varAha bhagavAn is known as gyAnapirAn. I would still say this. There is no means other than SrIman nArayaNan, who in the form of a wild boar, pierced and protected all the worlds which have oceans with rising and agitating waves. This is true for celestial entities who are desirous of reaching the celestial tree kaRpagam; this is true for nithyasUris, who are different from the celestial entities; this is true for other creations such as humans, animals etc. This is my ascertained view). nammAzhwAr has great affinity towards varAha bhagavAn. There is a sannidhi for bhUvarAha bhagavAn in AzhwArthirunagari. varAha bhagavan’s name gyAnapirAn is given to nammAzhwAr too by our elders.
