avathArikai (Introduction)
When asked “Though there are no good deeds which can lead to acceptance, can we not say that good deeds lead to adhvEsham (non-hatred) and Abhimukhyam (being favourable) [which will eventually lead to acceptance]?” nAyanAr mercifully explains.
chUrNikai 108
seydha nanRi thEdik kANAdhE keduththAy thandhAy enna adhvEsha AbimukhyangaLum sath karmaththAl alla.
Simple Explanation
Since AzhwAr searched for his own good deeds and could not find them, even adhvEsham and Abhimukhyam are not acquired based on good deeds.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
That is – as said in thiruvAimozhi 10.6.7 “vAttARRARku en nanRi seydhEnO en nenjil thigazhvadhuvE?” (what virtuous deed did I do to the easily approachable emperumAn at thiruvAttARu, for him to enter and shine in my heart?), AzhwAr searched for any good deed in him to make sarvESvaran accept him – but could not find it. And since AzhwAr established that both adhvEsham which means “the evil mind being gone” as said in thiruvAimozhi 2.7.8 ‘ennaith thImanam keduththAy (you reformed my evil mind), thiruvAimozhi 2.7.7 ‘maruvith thozhum manamE thandhAy’ (you bestowed the mind that made me fit well at your enjoyable lotus feet and worship) and Abhimukhyam which means acquiring a new mind that worships you firmly, are bestowed by bhagavAn only, it is clear that even adhvEsham and Abhimukhyam are not acquired through good deeds [by AzhwAr].
