sUthram 11

நித்யமாகையாவதுஎப்போதுமுண்டாகை

(nithyamAgaiyAvadhu – eppOdhum uNdAgai)

Meaning: Being eternal means existing at all times.

Explanation

The commentator next explains the quality of நித்யத்வம் (nithyathvam), eternality.

He defines it as:

ஸர்வகால வர்த்தித்வம்

(sarvakAla varthithvam)

“Existence at all times”.

Therefore he says:

எப்போதுமுண்டாகை

(eppOdhum uNdAgai)

“Being present at all times”.

The self is not something that comes into existence at one time and ceases to exist at another. Its existence continues through all periods of time. Thus, eternality means uninterrupted existence.
