avathArikai (Introduction)

piLLai lOkAchAryar is mercifully explaining the difference between the one who is engaging in worldly pleasures without knowing their nature and the one who is engaging in worldly pleasures well knowing their nature.

sUthram 187

agyanAna vishaya pravaNan kEvala nAsthikanaippOlE; gyAnavAnAna vishaya pravaNan Asthika nAsthikanaippOlE.

Simple Explanation

Ignorant one who is engaged in worldly pleasures is similar to a pure nAsthikan (atheist); knowledgeable one who is engaged in worldly pleasures is similar to Asthika nAsthikan (one who is theist just by appearance, but is atheist in heart).

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

agyanAna …

agyanAna vishaya pravaNan

One who does not understand the abundant defects of worldly pleasures and how they are contrary to the true nature of the self, and eagerly enjoys them.

kEvala nAsthikan

The pure atheist who roams around independently without accepting authenticity of SAsthram which reveals dharma (righteousness), adharma (unrighteousness), paralOka (paramapadham), chEthana (sentient beings), ISvara (God) and so on.

gyAnavAnAna vishaya pravaNan

One who understands the abundant defects of worldly pleasures and how they are contrary to the true nature of the self and still eagerly enjoys them.

Asthika nAsthikan

Since he accepts SAsthram which reveals dharma, adharma etc as authentic, he can be called as Asthika, and since he does not abide by the boundaries of such SAsthram, he can be called as nAsthika.
