avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “though these are ordained to create faith in specific aspects and are subsequently forbidden, if we held on to upAsanam, is it not as cruel as abhichAra karmam?” piLLai lOkAchAryar says “it is more cruel than holding on to abhichAra karmam”.

sUthram 132

adhu thOl puraiyE pOm; idhu marma sparSi.

Simple Explanation

That [abhichAra karmam] will go to the skin level [bodily platform]; this [bhakthi yOgam] will penetrate deeply [up to the self].

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

adhu …

That abhichAra karmam which is in the form of harming others, being the act of a dhEhAthmAbhimAni (one who misunderstands body to be the self), is a hurdle for the self who is present in a body, and the result of it will be limited sorrows which will leave after harming the body. Due to this reason, it is said as thOl puraiyE pOm (just harming the body).

This upAsanam which has ahankAram (self-effort) is the act of a person who has realised the self and is a hurdle for the self directly and will destroy the true nature of being totally dependent on bhagavAn. Thus, it is mentioned as marma sparSi (that which penetrates deeply).
