avathArikai (Introduction)
piLLai lOkAchAryar says “Not just that, it is also difficult to pursue”.
sUthram 133
idhudhAn karma sAdhyam AgaiyAlE dhushkaramumAy irukkum.
Simple Explanation
Since this (bhakthi yOgam) is accomplished with the assistance of rituals, it is difficult to perform as well.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
idhudhAn …
This upAsanam which is contradictory to the true nature of self as explained previously, is accomplished by rituals which cause anguish as said in
- bruhadhAraNyaka upanishath 4.4 “yagyEna dhAnEna thapasA nASakEna brAhmaNA vividhishanthi” (With yagyam (fire sacrifice), dhAnam (charity), thapas (penance) and upAvAsam (fasting), those who are knowledgeable about brahmam perform upAsanam (bhakthi yOgam))
- maithrI upanishath 7.9 “avidhyayA mruthyum thIrthvA vidhyayAmrutham aSnuthE” (By karmas (actions) one eliminates the sins which are hurdles and attains liberation by upAsanam)
- bruhadhAraNyaka upanishath 4.4 “sarvApEkshA cha yagyAdhi SruthEraSvavath” (Just as it is said in vEdhams that one must perform rituals such as fire sacrifice along with their limbs (accompanying deeds, called as angams), like a horse (without the saddle etc will not help in traveling), bhakthi yOgam will expect all actions as limbs).
- “kashAya pangthE: karmANi gyAnanthu paramA gathi:” (karmas such as yAgam etc are means to eliminate rajas and thamas; gyAnam is the best means for liberation)
- “kashAyE karmabhi: pakvE thathO gyAnam pravarthathE” (by performing karmas, sins become ripened (and fall down); with that, gyAnam occurs.
- lagvathri smruthi “janmAnthara sahasrEshu thapOdhyAna samAdhibhi: | narANAm kshINa pApAnAm krishNE bhakthi prajAyathE ||” (Due to karma yOgam in the form of thapas (penance), gyAna yOgam and bhakthi yOgam in thousands of births, for men, the sins get destroyed and bhakthi gets created)
Hence, these will be difficult to do and complete by the incapable jIvAthmA.
Thus, from sUthram 115 “prApakAnthara parithyAgaththukkum” up to here, the defects of other upAyams were explained in an elaborate manner.
