avathArikai (Introduction)

Previously piLLai lOkAchAryar explained that coming in contact with worldly pleasures  will lead to destruction of true nature and trying to acquire bliss through worldly pleasures is a result of viparItha gyAnam; further, he is saying that a person who is melted in thinking about bhagavAn’s qualities, will die just seeing them and that the contact is not needed.

sUthram 185

asuNamA mudiyumAppOlE, bhagavadhanubhavaikaparanAy mrudhu prakruthiyAy irukkumavan vishaya dharSanaththAlE mudiyumbadi.

Simple Explanation

Just as asuNamA bird will die, the tender-hearted person who is immersed in enjoying bhagavAn, will die seeing worldly pleasures.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

asuNamA …

That is – a bird named asuNamA, will melt on hearing very sweet music; at that time, if the very harsh drum was beaten and if it heard that, it will die; similarly, one who is engaged in enjoying bhagavAn only, and is melting in bhagavAn’s qualities, and is so tender to become sorrowful just on hearing the names of worldly pleasures, will suffer and die as soon as he sees worldly pleasures which are destructive of the true nature of the self, which should enjoy bhagavAn only.
