Simple Explanation
If there were no defect in self, one would have looked at the noble qualities of bhagavAn and bhAgavathas.

That is – when one does not have the eye disease which will show two moons, one will only see one moon; similarly, when one does not have any defect in one’s heart which shows the defect in others, one will see the noble qualities in bhagavAn and bhAgavathas. Since that is not happening, we should conclude that there is defect in self.
