avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “Though such mercy is present since time immemorial, wasn’t it stopped by the svAthanthryam (independence) of both the chEthana who is the doer and ISvara who is the bestower of the result? What if they continue to stop it?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains.

sUthram 403

krupai perugap pukkAl iruvar svAthantharyaththAlum thagaiyavoNNAdhapadi iru karaiyum azhiyap perugum.

Simple Explanation

When bhagavAn’s mercy flows it will flow being unable to be stopped by the independence of both chEthana and ISvara, just as a flooding river breaches the shore on either side.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

krupai perugappukkAl …

That is – when ISvaran’s quality, namely mercy, is granted in a normal manner by uncontrollably independent ISvraran, and when ISvaran considers to accept the chEthana by managing him according to his karma, such effort can be stopped by both of them. Unlike that, when he grants his mercy not in a normal manner but in a grand manner and when it overflows in him to eagerly accept the chEthana seeing his suffering as the cause, to be not stopped by (a) the independence of ISvaran which determines to manage the chEthana based on his karma and (b) the independence of chEthana which makes the chEthana violate the rules of ISvara as said in SrI pAncharAthram “Sruthi smrithir mamaivAgyA yasthAm ullangya varthathE” (One who violates my orders in the form of vEdham and smrithis), it will overflow to break both ISvara’s and chEthana’s independence which are in the form of two shores and destroy them as said in thiruvAimozhi 5.1.1vidhi vAykkinRu kAppAr Ar” (Who can stop bhagavAn’s mercy when it occurs?)
