<< Killing of SAlva and dhanthavakra

While krishNa studied under sAndhIpani muni, sudhAmA was his classmate. He is also known as kuchEla. krishNa and sudhAmA were very close friends. He was living a impoverished life with his wife.

Once his wife said to him “We are even struggling to get food. Your friend krishNa is dhvArakAdhISa. You can go and get some wealth as charity from him”. But sudhAmA responded saying “Why should we go and beg from anyone? We can live with what we have”. But since she forced him further, without any other choice, he started to go and meet krishNa. He thought he should not go empty-handed while going to see his friend; hence he gathered some flattened rice morsels and packed them in a cloth and carried with him.

When he reached dhvArakA, he went to krishNa’s palace. At that time, rukmiNi was serving krishNa. Seeing sudhAmA’s arrival, krishNa stepped out of his throne, rushed to the entrance, embraced him and welcomed him. After that, he brought sudhAmA and made him sit on his throne and washed his feet. rukmiNi fanned him with a whisk. They discussed the incidents which occurred during the time of their student-days.

krishNa then asked sudhAmA “What did you bring for me?”. With great shyness sudhAmA was looking at the pouch of flattened rice and krishNa too spotted that. He eagerly took that and put one morsel of flattened rice in his mouth. When he was to take the second morsel, rukmiNi stopped him. krishNa then asked “What is the purpose of your visit?” Since sudhAmA did not want to ask krishNa anything, he said “I have not seen you for a long time. Hence I just came to see you”. krishNa in his divine heart at once decided that sudhAmA’s small house will become a huge palace, and that happened immediately.

sudhAmA then left krishNa and returned to his town. There he saw a huge palace where his small house was. His wife came out and welcomed him. She was decorated with very nice garments and ornaments. sudhAmA understood that all of these are krishNa’s mercy only. Still, he lived a detached life as before.

Essence in this incident:

  • emperumAn is greatly affectionate towards his devotees. Though they think of themselves to be inferior, he considers them to be very superior.
  • If we go and ask for anything from bhagavAn, we will get as much as we requested for. But if he gives voluntarily, he will give more than what we had asked for.
  • After krishNa ate one morsel, rukmiNi stopped him. This is because we can consider her thinking “If he grants so much wealth for one morsel, how will sudhAmA manage huge wealth if bhagavAn consumes more morsels and grants much more wealth?”
