sUthram 72
ப்ரஸரணமில்லாமையாலே தோற்றாது.
prasaraNam illAmaiyAlE thORRAdhu.
Meaning
It does not manifest because there is no expansion.
Explanation
The reply to the previous doubt
The AchArya now answers the doubt raised in the previous sUthram.
Although knowledge is ajada (self-luminous), it does not always manifest. Knowledge reveals objects to its substratum, the self (svASraya), only when it expands towards the object (prasaraNa).
Why knowledge does not manifest in deep sleep
During the state of object-perception, knowledge expands through the senses and illuminates the objects perceived.
However, during states such as sushupthi (deep sleep) and similar conditions, this expansion (prasaraNa) does not take place. Therefore, knowledge does not become manifest, even though it continues to exist.
The text compares this to the light of a gem (maNi-prakASa). Although the gem naturally possesses luminosity, when its light is obscured it does not become visible. Similarly, knowledge remains self-luminous but does not manifest because its expansion is absent.
Further, owing to the predominance of thamO-guNa and similar obscuring factors, knowledge becomes contracted (sankuchitha) and therefore does not shine forth.
