sUthram 78
The AchArya, having explained the defining characteristic (lakshaNa) of achith, now proceeds to describe its threefold classification.
இது ஶுத்3த4ஸத்வமென்றும் மிஶ்ரஸத்வமென்றும் ஸத்வஶூந்யமென்றும் த்ரிவித4ம்.
idhu Sudhdha sathvam enRum miSra sathvam enRum, sathva SUnyam enRum thrividham.
Meaning
achith is of three kinds: Sudhdha-sathva, miSra-sathva, and sathva-SUnya.
Explanation
Having established the lakshaNa of achith, the AchArya now explains its threefold division.
achith exists in three forms:
- that which is the substratum of sathva alone,
- that which is the substratum of the three guṇas beginning with sathva,
- and that which is devoid of the guṇas beginning with sathva.
Accordingly, achith is classified into three categories:
- Sudhdha-sathva – that which has only sathva as its basis.
- miSra-sathva – that which has the three guNas – sathva, rajas, and thamas—as its basis.
- sathva-SUnya – that which is devoid of the guNas beginning with sathva.
The AchArya briefly states this threefold division here and will explain each category in detail in the succeeding sUthrams.
