sAmsArika pravruththigaLil karthruthvam svarUpa prayukthamanRu.
Meaning
In worldly activities, the soul’s agency does not arise from its essential nature.
Explanation
A doubt may arise here.
If the soul truly possesses karthruthva (agency), is all agency natural and intrinsic to its essential nature?
The author answers this by making an important distinction.
The expression “sAmsArika pravruththigaL” refers to worldly activities performed with a view to enjoying worldly objects such as:
- women (sthrI),
- food (anna),
- drink (pAna),
- and other sensory enjoyments.
These are activities undertaken for worldly enjoyment and involvement in samsAra.
With respect to such activities, the soul’s agency is not svarUpa-prayuktha (arising from its essential nature).
Rather, it is aupAdhika—arising due to limiting adjuncts (upAdhis) such as the body, senses, mind, karmic impressions, and association with prakruthi.
Therefore, although agency belongs to the soul, the agency involved in worldly pursuits is not intrinsic to the soul’s essential nature.
The author introduces this distinction in preparation for the further discussion that follows.
