After establishing the similarities (sAdharmya) between the soul (svarUpa) and its knowledge (gyAna), the AchArya now raises the question that naturally arises in the mind of an inquisitive student (thajjigyAsu): If they share so many common characteristics, what then is the difference between them? He therefore proceeds to explain their differences (vaidharmya).

Meaning
But if it is asked, “What is the difference between knowledge and the essential nature of the soul?”
Explanation
The question regarding their difference
Having first established the common characteristics (sAdharmya) between the soul and its knowledge, the AchArya now raises the question of their difference (vaidharmya).
An inquisitive student (thajjigyAsu) may ask:
“If the soul and its knowledge are both eternal, substantial, non-inert, and of the nature of bliss, then what distinguishes one from the other?”
AchArya introduces this question in order to explain the distinguishing characteristics of each in the following sUthra.
